A nice quiet ride up the New England Hwy saw me eventually putting the side-stand down at Willowtree where I was greeted by a couple of riders who were already ensconced at one of the tables outside the pub soaking up the peace and quiet of the small rural town, the peace didn’t last long though, as a few minutes later that unmistakable rumble of a large group of bikes heralded the main group of riders arriving from Tamworth. Willowtree had been selected as the meeting point for riders coming up from Sydney and it wasn’t too long before they arrived as well as a couple more from out west, finally making a sizeable line-up of bikes parked outside the pub.

After a bit of meeting and greeting I took off early in order to get up the road a bit wait and take a few photos of the riders, then, after the run had gone past fired the old girl up, and, giving her an extra half twist to the throttle eventually caught up with the main part of the run before they rolled into the next stop at Somerton. A while later Gary headed off to the cemetery to prepare a couple of things, and he had no sooner left when the highway patrol went past, Hooky, being a local to the area, reckoned the cop would be parked a couple of klicks down the road waiting for us, so, when we left the pub for the last leg to the cemetery he took the run at a very sedate (the speed limit) pace past the waiting radar, resulting in, probably much to the disgust of the radar operator, there being no dents to anyone’s wallets.

For me, just the sight of the line of bikes going through the cemetery to have the runs final stop and drink with Sharon would certainly have made the ride more than worthwhile had it simply all ended then, but, when after a few words of thanks for us being there Gary then revealed Sharon’s headstone, I honestly have to say, that headstone really was the icing on the cake for the day, and seeing it just blew me away. A good friend of Gary and Sharon had given it as a gift from the heart and no words or photos can do justice to its quality or to the thoughts of the assembled bikers there that day as it was uncovered. I can only say that it is a fitting tribute to Sharon and it will tell everyone who sees it, that, here lies a lady that engendered a lot of love and respect.

RIP Sharon. A friend and a true biker.
