Wolverines Poker Run 2008

Well folks, there are only a couple of words that describe this years poker run, wet, and bloody wetter, arriving at Bikes and Bits I fully expected to see a really poor turn up due to the wet weather, so as you can imagine I was pleasantly surprised to see over a hundred riders had donned just about every conceivable item of wet weather gear, and were getting ready to head off. It was a difficult sort of day to make a call as to just what to wear, as, on the first leg up to Kentucky it was intermittent rain, just enough at a time to get wet, and, when it stopped you almost got dry again, then back into more rain, the same applied whilst stopped at Kentucky, as, after taking off all the wet weather gear it was put it back on just as quickly as it started to rain again. That set the theme for the remainder of the run, get wet get dry, get hot and get cold, sort of like four seasons all rolled into one afternoon, still though, if it was easy all the time, everyone would be doing it.

The run took us through a variety of roads, which, given the on off wet conditions, slowed the riders down a bit, but in a few places still allowed for a bit of, let the hair down riding, or perhaps that should be, let the hair dry riding. Stopping at Walcha Road, then Walcha, and Uralla for more cards and to either take off or put back on the wet weather gear, we then did a final leg to Kootingal and the first sign of the sun for the day. The winning hand of four sevens received a well earned prize, and although I had a hand like a foot, when all the losing hands were put into a draw for selecting a prize off a table loaded with goodies, I managed to score a pair of binoculars, a pity that I got them at the end of the run, because I reckon they would have come in real handy for checking out the weather ahead of me earlier on the day. Considering the conditions the marshals did a great job in getting us all there in one piece, and as far as I know, no one headed off into the scenery to do a spot of gardening, so, all in all, a good if somewhat damp in places poker run, and hopefully it was just the wet one that we had to have in what has been a good string of fine conditions for the previous ones.

Congratulations to the North West NSW Hog Chapter for doing an excellent job in somewhat hard conditions, and a thank you to Hooky from Slopes and Plains AMC for giving me a place to stay on Saturday night, cheers mate. Hope to see you all in sunny weather next year.
